A Critique of Historical Scholarship: The distorted logic and ideological function of historical thinking

What historical inquiry yields is the finding that ‘we’ are a product of history and must understand ourselves as such. What needs to be ‘understood’ is that this ‘we’ stems from a higher necessity. The core of historical thinking is that the collective ‘we’ historians assume or even explicitly name in their considerations, whose fate they follow in a spirit of intellectual partisanship — ‘our identity’ — has a purpose that is rooted not in our present existence and doings but beyond them, in the past. According to the logic of this thinking, the meaning of the community of values we get to belong to has arisen from history and consists quite simply in us becoming or having become what we are today. The mission of this community of values is to realize and assert itself, and fulfilling this mission, if one follows the same logic, justifies the community’s existence.

„Zur Kritik der Geschichtswissenschaft: Die verkehrte Logik und der weltanschauliche Sinn des historischen Denkens“ (GS 2-19)
Der Ertrag der historischen Betrachtungsweise besteht in der Erkenntnis, dass ‚Wir‘ ein Produkt der Geschichte sind und uns als ein solches zu begreifen haben.
Was es da zu ‚begreifen‘ gilt, ist, dass sich dieses ‚Wir‘ einer höheren Notwendigkeit verdankt. Die Pointe des historischen Denkens besteht eben darin, dass es Sinn und Zweck des in seinen Betrachtungen unterstellten oder auch ausdrücklich von ihm namhaft gemachten Kollektivsubjekts, dessen Schicksal es geistig anteilnehmend verfolgt – ‚unsere Identität‘ –, nicht in dessen gegenwärtigem Dasein und Treiben ausmacht, sondern jenseits davon ansiedelt, in der Vergangenheit.
Der Sinn der Wertegemeinschaft, der wir uns zurechnen dürfen, geht nach der Logik dieses Denkens aus der Geschichte hervor und besteht schlicht und ergreifend darin, zu werden bzw. geworden zu sein, was wir heute sind. Der Auftrag dieser Wertegemeinschaft ist es, sich zur Entfaltung und Geltung zu bringen, und in dessen Erfüllung hat auch ihr Dasein, folgt man derselben Logik, seine Rechtfertigung.
