The democratic culture that prevails in a free country lives on active citizens who are sure about how criticism is supposed to work. Both those who constantly criticize, and those who one way or another check whether the diverse accusations are permissible, present themselves as masters of this craft.
Unfortunately, this does not mean that they have actually mastered it and know how criticism works. As critics, responsible citizens keep making the same mistakes, causing them not merely to muck up the initially theoretical business of criticizing. With their cockeyed way of objecting and complaining they develop a kind of will that makes them perfect everyday supporters — of everything they take such a dim view of.

Kritik – wie geht das? (GS 4-13)
Zur hochgeschätzten demokratischen Kultur gehört es, dass da Bürger laufend nicht nur privat, sondern auch öffentlich Kritik üben, unablässig eine bessere Welt vermissen und fordern. Die stellt sich deshalb aber nicht ein, was zur Folge hat, dass ein ansehnliches Standardrepertoire von Beschwerden fortlebt.
Das heißt leider nicht, dass die Beschwerde führenden Bürger beherrschen, wie Kritik geht. Ihnen unterlaufen immerzu die gleichen Fehler, durch die sie nicht nur das zunächst einmal theoretische Gewerbe des Kritisierens verpfuschen. Mit ihrem falsch gestrickten Einspruchswesen bilden sie den Willen aus, der sie zum perfekten Mitmacher qualifiziert – bei allem, was ihnen so missfällt.
Und mindestens zur selbe Blüte gelangt wie die Pflege kritischen Räsonierens sind im übrigen gewisse Standards der Zurückweisung von Kritik – bis hin zum Verbot…
